Changing the game for locally sourced produce
We are bringing the farm to the city
We are a commercial-size controlled environment farm minutes from Halifax, Nova Scotia. We work directly with Halifax's incredible restaurants, food service companies, and local distributors to supply amazingly fresh produce.
We grow organic leafy greens, mushrooms, and herbs without soil and only use minimal water. Our urban vertical farm has allowed us to reduce the growing footprint without compromising the produce's taste, colour, and texture.
Impacts
Annually, we are on track to produce 40,000 lbs of greens, 140,000 ounces of herbs and 10,500 lbs of mushrooms.
We will drastically reduce “food kilometres” by growing and delivering our produce within a 25 km radius of the farm.
Our products are grown without soil or pesticides.
Our growing process uses 95% less water compared to traditional growing methods.
Fresh picked… literally
Nova Scotia is known for its rich soil that produces a variety of crops consumed locally and worldwide. However, our short growing season means that most greens, herbs and mushrooms eaten in our province are imported from warmer climates.
Our vertical farm provides Haligonians with a year-round supply of locally grown fresh greens, herbs and mushrooms. With our restaurant and food service partners, we aim to make it possible for fresh greens to be harvested and enjoyed on the same day.
It’s a long road from farm to table
Freshness is only one part of the food supply chain. Produce consumed in Nova Scotia sometimes travels up to 2,500 kilometres to its final destination (your plate). This long-distance commute to your belly directly contributes to carbon emissions that harm our planet.
We believe there is a better and more sustainable way to supply produce to our communities. Reflecting on the days when food was grown and consumed locally as our guiding light, we could see the solution clearly. We needed to take advantage of new farming techniques that allowed us to bring the growing inside. This allows us to control the environment and increase production in a very small footprint. After a lot of research and hard work, our vertical urban farm was born.
